Lifelong Faith Formation

Here at St. John Vianney, we value the religious formation of all people in all stages of life. Learning about our faith needs to go beyond Confirmation as we have been charged with going out to all the world and proclaim the Gospel. For most of us, that world and mission is our home, our parish, and our diocese. Even though the Holy Scriptures make Christ present to us in reading and proclaiming them, the Catholic faith is not a "religion of the book," it is not just a collection of teachings and plattitudes. We are not a religion of the book, but a religion of the Word: the word of God who is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As G.K. Chesterton quipped,

"Let your religion be less of a theory and more of a love affair."

Like any great love, love leans on experience and grows through mutual understanding. The greatest lovers know the greatest and least details about the other, and rejoice in them. How much moreso for our faith. Christ is the divine bridegroom, and we, the Church, are his bride. Growing in the faith, therefore, necessitates our getting to know Jesus and loving him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. What the faith is becomes wedded to who the faith is. Then our heads and our hearts meet in a way that becomes contaigous joy that is "caught" by others far better than it could be "taught." That contaigous joy of Christ was and is the one greatest relevant factor for spreading the gospel and remaining in the faith.

It is often remarked by teachers that they learn more about a thing when they have to teach it. St. Paul tells us that we must always be ready to give an account of our faith, and as parents, we have the primary responsibility of expressing the faith to our children. We want to offer you - parents and all parishioners - different ways to find answers and enter deeper into the life and freedom of Christ. This will take time to develop and grow, but keep checking back to find resources, tools, opportunities, and suggestions to be inspired in the faith for your own sake and for that of your family, all to the glory of Most Holy Trinity.
