Southtowns Chesterton Society
This is Your Open Invitation to the
Southtowns Chesterton Society!
"There is a great man who makes every man feel small. But the real great man is the man who makes every man feel great."
"An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered."
“To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it.”
"The poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese."
“The whole pleasure of marriage is that it is a perpetual crisis.”
“There are some desires that are not desirable.”
Inagurated by our very own Director of Lifelong Faith Formation, Brady Webb, the Southtowns Chesterton Society meets to discuss the works and figure of the great Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936). This literary legend has been too little read in a world than so desperately needs his wit and wisdom, common sense and clarity, puns and paradoxes. His quotes traverse the internet and pepper sermons, but there is so much more to learn from Chesterton's holy joviality and his witness to the life-giving truths that he found most profoundly in the person of Jesus Christ. This prince of paradox helps us to see that "the world will never starve for a want of wonders, but for want of wonder." It is to imbibe his sense of wonder and gratitude that we gather to dine, drink, and discuss. Meetings are generally on the last Saturday of each month. The food is FREE; simply RSVP!
September 2021 will be a bit different. The Rochester Chesterton Society is holding their annual conference on Saturday, September 25th. Instead of our normal meeting, we will attend the conference if we are individually able. All are welcome to meet us there! Two prominent Chestertonians will be speaking there: Dale Ahlquist, the president of the American Chesterton Society and host of the long-running show "The Apostle of Common Sense" that was on EWTN; and Joseph Pearce, an internationally renown speaker, writer, and Chesterton scholar. Details for the conference are HERE.
If you need a ride, contact Brady Webb, and we can carpool!
