The Sacrament of First Reconciliation or Penance (commonly called Penance, Reconciliation, or Confession) is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, in which the faithful obtain absolution for the sins committed against God and are reconciled with the community of the Church. By this sacrament Christians believe they are freed from sins committed after Baptism.
Students generally make their First Reconciliation in second grade after attending a series of Sacramental Preparation classes and a retreat.
As a stage in the Faith Formation of the children, 1st Reconciliation is generally woven into the weekly experience, both in connecting various aspects of the faith to the sacrament, and also direct preparation for what to expect, how to view the sacrament, and practicing. See the 1st-5th Faith Formation overview page for the standard expectations for the program that those who will be making their 1st Reconciliation.
